Diagnosing a Failed Stator Coil

A stator coil failure can manifest in several ways, depending on whether it powers your ignition system, charging system, or both. If you're experiencing any of the following symptoms, it's a strong indication that your stator coil needs to be tested and likely replaced:

  • No Spark or Weak Spark: This is the most definitive symptom on many ATVs, dirt bikes, and PWC where the stator directly powers the CDI or ECU for ignition.
  • Poor Battery Charging: If your battery constantly dies even with the engine running, the charging windings on your stator have likely failed.
  • Engine Stalling or Cutting Out: A stator that is failing can work when cold but cut out as the engine warms up and heat causes the windings to short.
  • Dim or Flickering Lights: Insufficient power from the stator will cause headlights and other electronics to perform poorly.
